The City of Port Adelaide Enfield is delighted to announce it will host the Stage 1 start of the 2018 Santos Tour Down Under.
Stage 1 of this premier cycling race will see the riders set off from Commercial Road at Port Adelaide and travel to Lyndoch on Tuesday, January 16.
Hon Leon Bignell, Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation said that Port Adelaide had a stage start at the inaugural race in 1999, and we know the community will welcome the race back with great enthusiasm with this area having so much to offer to not only the race but the fans and visitors to the State.”
Mike Turtur, Race Director, Santos Tour Down Under said that one of the race route highlights in 2018, was the nostalgic return to Port Adelaide for the start of Stage 1.
City of Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor, Gary Johanson said the Council was honoured to be chosen to host the race’s official start, which will take place in the historical state heritage and maritime precinct of Port Adelaide.
“We proudly hosted the first stage of the Santos Tour Down Under in 1999, so it’s wonderful to see that it has come back to Port Adelaide.
“I am sure that the local community is as excited as I am. I encourage our community to try and set a record for attendance at this event in the heart of Port Adelaide.
“The race starts here and gives us a chance to celebrate our vibrant cycling culture and showcase everything that Port Adelaide has to offer.
“We are planning a day of activities here at Port Adelaide, that will set the tone for an exhilarating week of competition between the world’s most elite cyclists on this the 20th year of the Tour Down Under.”
