When it first started 5 years ago, the Kilburn Community Karaoke Club organisers struggled to encourage any of the timid group of attendees to take to the microphone.
But as the years have passed, it’s now a case of ‘get in line’ with a strong showing of enthusiastic performers each week.
Even from the car park, you can ‘hear’ the fun going on inside. There’s loud applause as one lady belts out “Rock Around the Clock”, while audience members jump and bounce around the room, twirling and rocking away to the fifties favourite.
For organiser Keith, this is one of the highlights of his week. As a dedicated karaoke fan, he goes out singing most nights – but the Kilburn group is his favourite gathering.
Some weeks up to 40 people attend – and for many, it’s a treasured opportunity to socialise and have fun, making it a perfect example of our region’s City Plan 2030 priority to bring our community together.
The club is open to any karaoke lovers and new members are always welcome.
They meet on Thursdays from 1:30 – 4:30pm at the Kilburn Community Centre, 59 Gladstone Avenue, Kilburn. $2 donation requested.
